A backyard storage shed is a great way to add storage space to your home instantly. However, the storage shed can quickly become an organizational nightmare if you're not careful. Many people start with good intentions, but over time they toss tools into the shed, shove garden equipment into whatever space is available, and the shed quickly becomes a catch-all for everything you no longer want in your home.
Not only does a disorganized shed make it challenging to find the tools and equipment you're looking for, but it also quickly makes you go into an overwhelmed mode and adds additional stress to your life. Sound familiar?
Here are two key elements that are must-haves in your storage shed.
1. Shelving
Shelving is a game-changer. Organizers Julie and Eryk assembled three shelving units to maximize the verticle space in our client's shed.
With the shelves installed, it made it easier for Julie and Eryk to organize equipment and tools. Many of the items in the storage shed were no longer needed or served a purpose for the client. We made three piles during the edit process: keep, throw away, and donate. The homeowner had already set up a junk removal company to haul away anything they were not keeping by the end of the day. Win!
Organizing tip: When organizing the contents of a shed, you will want to avoid stacking as much as possible because stacking makes it challenging to find what you're searching for and forces you to move all kinds of material out of the way to grab the item you require. If you must stack to save space, stack like items together; all paint, power tools, gardening supplies, etc. Adding clear bins with labels makes it quick and easy to find your favorite gardening gloves.
2. Pegboards
Classic pegboard is possibly the one organization material that is even more beneficial than shelving for your tools and equipment. Shovels of various sizes, rakes, hammers, and other tools can easily take up space while making your shed disorganized. Tools with long handles resting against walls quickly become tripping hazzard. However, on a pegboard, you can hang all your tools on the wall, making it easy to see everything you have while freeing up space off the ground.
Our client already had a good start with pegboard installed over the workbench with smaller tools, they just needed help clearing off the workspace to make it usable again.
Organizing tip: Pegboard is also excellent for smaller tools and craft supplies. It keeps all your supplies at arm's length, so instead of sifting through boxes and bins for the correct item, look up and grab the tool you need from the wall. Pegboards are also customizable, so if you ever want to tweak your storage setup, add space for new tools/craft supplies, or swap what you're hanging on the wall, you can easily do this by adjusting the pegs. Voila, a whole new setup!
You may be asking yourself how long it took to take this disorganized shed into a usable space again? The answer is two professional organizers and six hours of work. You need Team Peace in your life. Now is the time, why wait?
